Mardi Gras Craze in Keno City Yukon
Keno City - what can one say about Keno City. A quirky mining town located at the end of the Silver Trail Highway in Yukon, Canada, Keno City packs a lot into its small town charm. It offers a few comprehensive museums about it's history as one of the once richest silver deposits in the world, endless hiking and wildlife viewing, and the Yukon's best scenic viewpoint at the top of Keno Hill. It also holds a few great festivals every year, where Keno's 19 colourful residents welcome anyone who wants to escape the day-to-day bore for a few days of celebration. It's sort of like Neverland for adults: when festival'ing in Keno City, the outside world simply doesn't exist. For a few days visitors trade reality for silly costumes, dancing until dawn, and great friendships new and old.
I stayed with my friend Kelly in a converted school bus owned by the local pizza shop owner, Mike Mancini. We wore sequinned tops, played guitar and sang Joni Mitchell, drank camp coffee amongst the tall fireweed, and soaked up the bright northern sun on Keno Hill. It was the perfect break from reality.
